Your Favorite Breed Is a Star

There are over two hundred breeds of dog, from teeny, tiny Chihuahuas and toy breeds, up to giant breeds like Saint Bernard or English Mastiff. As a dog lover myself, all breeds of dog are stars in their own ways to me. However, most of us have a breed that especially appeals to us, that connects to us in some way. These are dogs who would do anything for us and dogs for whom we would do anything.

French Bulldogs Come in First

I would never have imagined that French Bulldogs would turn out to be the number one breed in America! Until recently, they were fairly obscure, and I had never seen one until we got a dog identification guide book. Talk about love at first sight. When we got our first Frenchie, Gabby, I was actually astounded at how rascally and friendly and loving she was, she never disappointed.

Labs: Dogs for All Seasons

Only recently nosed out of first place by French Bulldogs, Labrador Retrievers are still among the most versatile and beloved dog breeds. Labs were the top dog in the US for 31 astounding years, until 2022 when they were edged out by those rascal French Bulldogs. However, there is a good reason why Labs have been popular for so long. Labs are notorious for their generally happy dispositions and ability to fit in with the family.

The Genial Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever was originally almost exclusively a hunting dog, used for bringing back game not only from the water, but from land. Golden Retrievers were developed, through careful breeding, in Scotland. Scotland is known for it’s rugged terrain, with its mix of water features, meadows, and woods. It was this mixed landscape that sparked the ‘birth’ of the Golden Retriever. As with most dogs used for hunting, the Golden Retriever is friendly, considerate, and affectionate.

The Grumpy-Looking, Loving Bulldog

Face full of wrinkles, but a heart full of love is probably a good way to describe the Bulldog. These dogs are sometimes referred to as English Bulldog, British Bulldog, or simply as Bulldog, but they are still the same good-natured guys and gals. It’s hard to believe that the original Bulldogs were used in the ‘sport’ of bull-baiting. English Bulldogs are a very old breed and their development began way back in the time of King Henry III of England.

Friendly, Active Hunter – The Beagle

One thing that can certainly be said about Beagles is that they are super friendly. They are also excellent hunting dogs and will eagerly chase down any game from squirrels and rabbits, grouse and pheasants, up to larger game like coyotes and even wild boar. Beagles enjoy the companionship of other dogs, but are also great with people and even household pets. Be sure to introduce your cats to your Beagle while he or she is still young.

The Rottweiler: Strong and Powerful

Is the Rottweiler a dangerous dog? The simple answer is NO. While Rotties are large and strong dogs, they are not intrinsically vicious. This doesn’t mean that they are a good fit for someone who just likes the way they look. Rottweilers have, from their early beginnings, been working dogs. Originally, their ancestors were used in Ancient Rome to herd cattle. As time went by and other dogs were mixed in with the original stock, they developed into the dog we know today.

The Handsome German Shorthaired Pointer

Are you a hunter looking for an adaptable, tough, and attractive dog? You may not need to look further than the German Shorthaired Pointer. This breed is good not only for pointing out small game such as birds and rabbits, tracking animals, but also for retrieving downed game either on land or in the water. This dog also enjoys interacting with children, and is a reliable watch dog.

The Lovable Sausage Dog

Most Dachshunds today are family companion dogs. The average Dachshund owner has probably lost sight of the fact that these lovely little dogs are actually keen hunters. The name of the dog comes from the German words ‘dachs’ meaning badger, and ‘hund’ meaning, of course, dog. The short legs of the Dachshund were developed to make it easier to fit down into a badger’s sett or burrow.

Mixed Breed Dogs

Whether they are called Mixed Breed, Crossbreed, Mutts, Mongrels, Hybrid Dogs, or Designer Dogs, they all have one thing in common: they have at least two ancestors of different breeds. These dogs can make excellent pets, every bit as good as a pure breed dog, and they repay the love and devotion of their owners in like kind. Whether the dog has a noble and exalted appearance or is downright funny-looking, they are still dogs, and as such have a special place in our hearts.

Cherrybrook Grooming Supplies

While most dogs spend their lives as family pets and companions, some dogs are given the privilege of participating in dog shows. Dogs who are part of dog shows are also pets, but they do spend more time being groomed and made ready for the show than the average dog. Dog shows are important in maintaining breed standards. These standards also help to assure that good genes, that best represent the breed, will be carried on and preserved.

Petmate

Owning a dog brings many things with it: joy, happiness, companionship, and responsibility. Almost all of us who own dogs were first time dog owners. Some were lucky enough to have parents or relatives who could help them out when they got their first puppy, but previously many people have had to rely on books from the library for information when they got their first dog. Now, with the Worldwide Web, all of us can research quickly and easily any question we might have about our dogs.

Whistle

One of the biggest nightmares dog owners have is that their dog will get lost. It almost happened to us with Pip. He used to like to go out to the woods with my husband while he cut wood. Pip loved the sound of the chainsaw and enjoyed the wood chips falling on him. One day when my husband was stacking the wood he had cut, Pip evidently heard a chainsaw off in the distance and headed for it. When my husband turned around, Pip was gone. We searched all over the woods, and finally I decided to go up the road to see if he was there.

A Pup Above Stands Out

The dry foods produced by A Pup Above are created in a different way from most dry dog foods. Dry dog food is usually mixed in a large batch, forced through an extruder, cut into the appropriate sized pieces as the food leaves the extruder, baked in an oven, and then bagged. This is not the way A Pup Above prepares their dry dog food. To start with, only human-grade ingredients are chosen and they include: 70% Animal Protein; Superfoods; Non-GMO Vegetables; Salmon Oil.

Redbarn Premium Food for Dogs

While these companies did produce good dog food, eventually many pooch parents were looking for food that might address their dog’s needs better. It’s no secret that many dogs suffer from allergies to different dog foods, usually because some of the ingredients are indigestible.
