French Bulldogs Come in First

I would never have imagined that French Bulldogs would turn out to be the number one breed in America! Until recently, they were fairly obscure, and I had never seen one until we got a dog identification guide book. Talk about love at first sight. When we got our first Frenchie, Gabby, I was actually astounded at how rascally and friendly and loving she was, she never disappointed.

The Genial Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever was originally almost exclusively a hunting dog, used for bringing back game not only from the water, but from land. Golden Retrievers were developed, through careful breeding, in Scotland. Scotland is known for it’s rugged terrain, with its mix of water features, meadows, and woods. It was this mixed landscape that sparked the ‘birth’ of the Golden Retriever. As with most dogs used for hunting, the Golden Retriever is friendly, considerate, and affectionate.

The Grumpy-Looking, Loving Bulldog

Face full of wrinkles, but a heart full of love is probably a good way to describe the Bulldog. These dogs are sometimes referred to as English Bulldog, British Bulldog, or simply as Bulldog, but they are still the same good-natured guys and gals. It’s hard to believe that the original Bulldogs were used in the ‘sport’ of bull-baiting. English Bulldogs are a very old breed and their development began way back in the time of King Henry III of England.

Friendly, Active Hunter – The Beagle

One thing that can certainly be said about Beagles is that they are super friendly. They are also excellent hunting dogs and will eagerly chase down any game from squirrels and rabbits, grouse and pheasants, up to larger game like coyotes and even wild boar. Beagles enjoy the companionship of other dogs, but are also great with people and even household pets. Be sure to introduce your cats to your Beagle while he or she is still young.

The Rottweiler: Strong and Powerful

Is the Rottweiler a dangerous dog? The simple answer is NO. While Rotties are large and strong dogs, they are not intrinsically vicious. This doesn’t mean that they are a good fit for someone who just likes the way they look. Rottweilers have, from their early beginnings, been working dogs. Originally, their ancestors were used in Ancient Rome to herd cattle. As time went by and other dogs were mixed in with the original stock, they developed into the dog we know today.

The Lovable Sausage Dog

Most Dachshunds today are family companion dogs. The average Dachshund owner has probably lost sight of the fact that these lovely little dogs are actually keen hunters. The name of the dog comes from the German words ‘dachs’ meaning badger, and ‘hund’ meaning, of course, dog. The short legs of the Dachshund were developed to make it easier to fit down into a badger’s sett or burrow.

Petmate

Owning a dog brings many things with it: joy, happiness, companionship, and responsibility. Almost all of us who own dogs were first time dog owners. Some were lucky enough to have parents or relatives who could help them out when they got their first puppy, but previously many people have had to rely on books from the library for information when they got their first dog. Now, with the Worldwide Web, all of us can research quickly and easily any question we might have about our dogs.
